Revolutionising the Textile Industry: SWA’s Hybrid CPI/DAF Unit
In a world where environmental concerns are at the forefront of business operations, industries are constantly seeking innovative and sustainable solutions. The textile industry, known for its complex and varied waste water streams, is no exception. At SWA Water, an Australian-based world leader in industrial waste water treatment, we’ve developed a groundbreaking solution that’s making a significant positive impact: the Hybrid CPI/DAF Unit.
From small stand-alone plants to large industrial estates, SWA Water has a proven track record of designing and building robust treatment plants for many industries including the textile sector. We understand that each textile effluent treatment plant facility presents a unique challenge, with effluent composition varying based on production processes, dye types, and raw materials. Our approach is bespoke, we tailor each treatment plant to meet the specific requirements and stringent regulatory standards of our clients, both in Australia and globally.
How Our Hybrid CPI/DAF Unit Tackles Textile Effluent Treatment

Textile waste water treatment plants are typically complex systems that incorporate several key stages to ensure a high level of purification. These stages generally include screening to remove large solids, chemical treatment to destabilise contaminants, physical separation to remove suspended particles, biological treatment to break down organic matter, and sludge dewatering. Our Hybrid CPI/DAF Unit fits seamlessly into this process, particularly excelling in the critical physical separation phase.
The Hybrid CPI/DAF Unit is a true game-changer because it intelligently combines two powerful technologies, the Corrugated Plate Interceptor (CPI) Oil Separator and Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF). This unique fusion allows us to achieve superior treatment results with a single, compact system.
The Power of a Hybrid System
So, how does this clever unit actually work? The process is a testament to our engineering expertise.
1.CPI Oil Separator: The waste water first enters the CPI section. This is a rectangular separator with coalescing plates that work to separate free, non-emulsified oil and other light contaminants from the water. Simultaneously, heavier, settleable solids are encouraged to fall out of the water and collect in a sludge zone below the plates. This initial step effectively handles a significant portion of the oil and solids load.
2.Chemical Precipitation: After the CPI stage, the water is dosed with a coagulant and a flocculant. This chemical treatment destabilises the remaining suspended particles and allows them to bind together, forming larger, more easily removable clumps, or ‘flocs.’
3.Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF): The flocculated water then flows into the DAF chamber. Here, a stream of pressurised, air-saturated water is introduced, creating millions of micro-bubbles. These tiny bubbles attach themselves to the flocs, making them buoyant and causing them to rapidly rise to the surface.
4.Separation: A mechanical skimmer then scrapes off the thick, concentrated sludge layer that has formed on the surface. The now-clarified, purified water is discharged for further treatment or can be reused, depending on the client’s requirements.
The Benefits That Matter
The SWA Hybrid CPI/DAF Unit offers a range of compelling benefits for the textile industry, streamlining operations and boosting environmental compliance.
- Superior Oil and Grease Removal: The combination of CPI and DAF technologies ensures the efficient removal of both free and emulsified oils, even at very low concentrations. This is crucial for textile facilities that use a variety of oily compounds in their processes.
- Enhanced Suspended Solids Reduction: The unit is highly effective at reducing suspended solids, which improves water clarity and protects downstream equipment from blockages and damage.
- Reduced Chemical Usage: By optimising the treatment process, the Hybrid CPI/DAF Unit helps to significantly minimise the consumption of expensive coagulants and flocculants, leading to substantial cost savings.
- Compact & Efficient Design: Our unit’s modular design means it can be installed in a relatively small footprint, making it ideal for facilities with limited space. Its low maintenance requirements also reduce downtime and operational costs.
At SWA Water, we’re proud to be at the forefront of providing sustainable and highly effective waste water treatment solutions. Our Hybrid CPI/DAF Unit isn’t just a piece of equipment, it’s a testament to our commitment to a cleaner, greener future for the textile industry and beyond.
