Oil Separators: Industrial Applications & Insights

oil separator

Industrial Oil Separators are a key component in industrial processes, used to filter and separate oil and other contaminants from air, gas, water and other liquids, which helps ensure the quality of the product and reduce costs. The main purpose of Industrial Oil Separators is to remove oil and other contaminants from the process stream to meet environmental regulations, lower emissions and improve product quality. Depending on the type of system being used, some separators can also be used for recovering oil and other valuable materials such as solvents or fuels for reuse.

Let’s take a look at how industrial oil separators work and their various applications.

How industrial oil separators work

Industrial oil separators use gravity combined with a difference in specific gravity to separate oil from water or other liquids. Depending on the type of oil, the separated oil can either be recycled or disposed of safely.

SWA Water’s industrial oil separator units have been shown to reduce oil concentrations from 10,000 ppm to less than 1 ppm. Our oil separators are regarded as among the best in the world and, as they have no moving parts, they are robust, easy to maintain, have a low operating cost and are highly efficient. Our ‘CC’ Series of CPI coalescing plate oil separators are modular in design and can be tailored to your specific operating conditions, from small workshops and service stations to large oil refineries.

CPI coalescing plate oil separators

CPI coalescing plate oil separators are a type of oil water separator designed to remove free-floating oil and suspended solids. They work by forcing the mixture of oil and water through a series of corrugated plates. The oil rises to the underside of the plates and then rises to the top of the separator, while the water passes through to the outlet chamber. These high-performance separators are ideal for collecting and removing oil from process liquids, such as engine oils, transformer oils, cooling fluids, and hydraulic oils. They are often used in applications requiring high levels of separation efficiency, such as oil production and refining, petrochemical plants, power stations, wastewater treatment facilities, and more.

Uses & applications

Industrial oil separators are most often used in factories where large amounts of water may come into contact with oils or other hazardous materials, such as in machine lubrication, parts cleaning or hydraulic systems. In these cases, the oil separator helps to keep the water clean and prevent further contamination of other processes. In addition to separating oil from water, they can also be used to remove solids such as dirt and sludge from wastewater streams before they enter rivers or other bodies of water. This helps protect our environment from pollution caused by these materials that could otherwise end up in our drinking water supply.
